Casa Loma

Casa Loma neighbourhood is named after the famous castle on Avenue Road Hill
built by Henry Pellatt, who purchased 25 lots in 1903. Casa Loma was constructed in 1911-1914, it cost $3,500,000 to build. Only a decade later, Henry Pellatt lost the castle to the city of Toronto to alleviate his serious debt. Following the transfer, the land to the north of the castle was subdivided, and the current neighbourhood began.

The neighbourhood is situated between St. Clair Avenue West, CP railway tracks, Avenue Road and Bathurst Street. The castle, the heart of the neighbourhood, is surrounded by lush ravines and large old trees.

The neighbourhood is made up of large mansions and well landscaped gardens, and wealthy residents who copy the romance of the castle itself. The majority of homes in this area were built before 1940, architectural influences are from Tudor, Georgian, Edwardian, or English Cottage designs. There is excellent access to many TTC routes. Educated, wealthy and overwhelmingly urban — this segment consists of a mix of larger families and older couples and singles in neighbourhoods who enjoy a leisure-intensive lifestyle. They enjoy cruises and spa vacations, often dine at formal restaurants and do yoga and Pilates. Unsurprisingly then, their favourite retail stores include chains that offer athletic apparel and high-end fashion. Reflecting this segment’s older-than-average maintainers, they enjoy traditional media, watching TV news and sports as well as reading a variety of newspapers and magazines that cover business, entertainment and fashion. But because many households are filled with teenagers and older children, they’re also current with digital media.

Residents are both comfortable and connected: their high Community Involvement and Global Consciousness cause them to give generously of their time and money, both locally and internationally. Strong on Personal Expression and Introspection & Empathy, these Canadians make a habit of considering the feelings and perspectives of others and try to convey their ideas in an authentic way.
